Aragon Automotive and Mobility Cluster
Harvard University professor Michael Porter, in his article “The Competitive Advantage of Nations,” popularized the concept of clusters worldwide. As he noted in 2003, economies structured in clusters increase productivity because they stimulate knowledge, facilitate the presence of specialized suppliers, and foster the creation of advanced infrastructures, thereby improving innovation capacity. In addition, they make it possible to quickly capture customer needs and business opportunities, ensure that information flows properly, and allow technology to spread more rapidly. They are also a stimulus for the creation of new companies and enhance business dynamism.
In Aragon, Porter’s ideas began to take shape in 2007 with the first contacts among the main companies in the automotive sector. A year later, in 2008, the Aragon Automotive Cluster was created, with the participation of 14 companies from the sector and 6 organizations related to R&D, internationalization, and economic promotion. That same year, the European Commission announced the reorientation of its industrial policies toward the establishment of excellent clusters capable of competing globally, and five years later published the communication “For a European Industrial Renaissance,” in which it identified clusters as agents capable of fostering collaboration among companies from different countries, contributing to innovation and global growth.
